Sundome, the Greatest Manga with the Greatest Disappointing Ending: The Unexpected Part Two

As if to prove to myself how important Sundome is to me, I just woke up and my first conscious thoughts were of how the ending bothered me. However, where in my first post I mentioned that the ending was vague (which it still is), I think I may have figured it out. The rest of this post is going to be spoilers, so please just skip this one if you haven’t read Sundome and you want to. If you have, please, please, please tell me what you thought about the ending and tell me if I’m right or wrong.

SPOILERS BELOW———————————————————————————

There is this over-arching story element in the story that revolves around the Roman Club that the characters belong to in school, which I honestly thought was ridiculous, where the Alumni had put in place a rule that if any members could stay a virgin throughout their high school career, the Alumni would pay for your college education to wherever you wanted to go. Obviously most would succeed in this endeavor (I know I would have) but what the Alumni do is send ‘assassins’, women (or men I guess) that would present themselves to certain members of the club and willingly have sex with them, which the women would have various things awarded to them for doing so.

This story element makes the events interesting, in which the new girl in school, Kurumi Sahana, who the protagonist, Hideo Aiba, is instantly attracted to. This is shown by the raging boner he gets when he sees her. Over the course of th story the mystery is does she really like him back, or is she just another assassin sent to fuck Aiba.

Now I can tell you that the signs that she is NOT an assassin are pretty clear in that she teases the FUCK out of Aiba but never allows him to have sex with her. The rules are clear in the Roman Club: if you have sex you’re kicked out and you won’t get any financial backing from the Alumni. Which leads me to the ending.

Over the course of the story it is clear that Sahana also has some sort of mysterious illness that through foreshadowing, is most likely going to end with her death. Towards the end of the story she is put into isolation at the hospital and Aiba and the other members of the Roman Club devise a plan to help her escape so that she can see the Wave Flowers before it’s too late.

Now here’s my problem with the ending. It would appear by the artwork that they have sex at the beach while watching the wave flowers, but again, this isn’t made clear, especially by what is on the last page of this scene. The last words on the page, also which isn’t explained who is talking, are “When I wake up, let’s have sex”, and the last drawing is of his hand in hers, but her fingers aren’t entwined in his, like if they are limp.

Now on the very next page it shows Aiba as a resident in a hospital (he always wanted to be a doctor), and then at home with his wife where it is implied he just had a sexual snafu, wether it be he prematurely ejaculated or has a boner malfunction, it isn’t clear. But my problem is, who the hell is the wife?!

Is it Sahana? If you look closely you’ll notice that this woman has a mole on her chin, Sahana never had a mole. Her breasts are larger and her hair is longer too, but obviously those can change as a woman gets older, but why the mole? And Aiba never calls this woman by name, so it’s even more vague as to who the hell this woman is. I would go by the face, but let’s be honest, the only thing helping people figure out what woman is who in anime is their breast size and hair style, other-wise they are interchangeable most of the time.

But now I think I may have been wrong about the ending, I think that maybe Sahana did die, right on that beach next to Aiba, which lead to them not having sex, which lead to Aiba getting the Roman Club Alumni to back him financially to become a Doctor. Now the whole time I was saying to myself, if Sahana dies, I’m going to cry like a big bitch. In fact I did cry once during this story during a foreshadowing scene where the fish Aiba and Sahana get together at a festival, the one they name after her dies suddenly. But since the ending is so vague it took away from my emotional response to whatever the hell happened. This story most of the time doesn’t make you think that hard, but then you have to be a goddamn detective to figure out the fucking ending!

The only other review I could find on the ending of Sundome says that the woman is Aiba, but I don’t that’s right because of the mole on her chin. That particular reviewer was also the one that said this story wasn’t mainstream and that they couldn’t recommend this one to people to read because of the strong sexual content, on which I say fuck you, you asshole.

Anyway that’s what I think happened, it’s just a shame the ending had to be such bullshit, the same thing happened at the end of Welcome to the NHK, another one of my absolute favorites, that ends weird and abruptly. It’s like these story tellers know how to tell a story and when it comes to ending it they get all “how can we make this ending as annoying as hell as possible to people outside of Japan who have been invested in it for over three years even though it’s only eight volumes but the translation process is ungodly slow and we’ve already moved on to two sequels a year and half ago?”

I mean Jesus jumped-up fucking pogo stick I just realized this fucking thing was released in 2006 in Japan and ended in 2009 and we’re only now getting the ending?! I guess it’s a fucking miracle this came out here at all!

Anyway, if I’m wrong about th ending please someone explain it to me, all I’m saying is if that woman was Sahana all growed up then why draw her with a fucking mole? All you’re doing is confusing your audience you asshole! Fucking hell I’ve spent nearly $104 to read this shit and support the release and this is the ending I get? Fucking bullshit!

Hey I just finished this series today and I have the exact same thoughts going through my head. (I’ve also read your part 3 btw). I’m so disappointed, I really wanted either a dramatic ending or a happy one but not to have to wonder what the hell actually even happened! I really hate these sort of endings, it’s going to boggle my mind for so long and I don’t know anyone else who reads this to get a better idea of how it ended. Damnit what the fuck? Sorry I’m just annoyed at this so much, I could see it being a crappy ending when I realised I had hardly any pages left and yet there didn’t appear to be an ending happening… bah

naw man I’m totally with ya! I don’t know anyone who reads this either that’s why I wrote all this, it was a like a cry for help lol

seriously this series was SO GOOD and the ending was SO LAME, and I ain’t going to pretend to be like an expert on the subject but it seems like a lot of Japanese stuff is like this, it’s like having a 5 star dining experience, and then for desert they roll out a microwaveable peach cobbler. Sure it’s not awful, but it’s extremely disappointing.

Well flabslapper (lol your name) why does the ending leaves you with a feeling of melancholy, i mean that metaphor at the ending, besides the fact they didnt have sex, cuzz she said clearly: you want to jerk off?, and thats all tha happened, then we dont get to see her more in the few last 3 remaining pages, and the fact that that women its not kurumi, and that disease wich makes you losing too much blood, sadly she died, but I’m impressed that Hideo is not in shock,i mean thats the girl you love the most, if youd knew she was going to die, and you wanted to spend with her a last moment, thats ok, but i think she was a unique special girl, thanks Kazuto Okada thanks to you i had a trauma for days without a good reason.

I just read this entire series in the last 6 hours. In volume 8 I think I started feeling really upset about page 50ish and totally crying till the last few pages. Then nothing, no damn clue what happened. No closure at all. So I’m now searching for some kind of answer to the end.
I read on wikipedia that there was a series of 4 films made from this … did they follow the manga at all ? and if so was there any clearer picture of what happened.

I tried watching the first movie but it wasn’t subbed so I couldn’t understand what was going on ):

but yeah, that’s how I felt too, but I’m just sticking with that the girl at the end IS the same girl, you know, just so I can sleep at night lol

I agree… I’m so disturbed by the ending that I’m just going to say that the part that looks like she died was the author just f***ing with us and that the chick he married is still Sahana. Like you, I need to be able to sleep. However, if you want a good manga that has a satisfying ending (no nudity though), look up “Bitter Virgin”. Really good story. In fact, I’m going to reread it to help me get over this.

If you look 12 pages back you see a woman and and a older woman saying welcome home. I think that those people are Kurumi Sahana more specifically her grandma her sister and possibly a few younger siblings. I believe that Kurumi Sahana did die because in the last couple of pages Hideo Aiba mentions trying the golden fountain which through the whole series happened often between him and Kurumi Sahana, but she didn’t respond positivity right away. As fir the identity of the woman I believe that it is the person i mentioned who i thought was Kurumi Sahana sister.

Well, this is what it seems most logical to think of as the ending. She was almost gone by the time the wave flowers were ready. When they got to the beach, she jerked him off, which if you read again, it even shows Sahana asking if he wanted her to jerk him off. She knew she was going to die that night which is why she made the offer to have sex when she woke up, as she has stated through the series she’d never have sex with him. He made it through graduation without ever having sex as losing her he wouldnt worry about it at all and got the funding from the Roman Club for college. At least this is what I’ve come up with.

    February 3, 2011 at 6:03 pm

she died. it is not explicitly stated but if you recall volume 7 i believe, it states that it was the last summer they would all be together. she said she would also never have sex with him so i take her saying when she woke up she wanted to ahve sex to be her way of saying i love you and also goodbye. you really have to look into the hidden ques in this volume. also she jerked him off as stated in the volume. she asked him if he wanted her to. as for the ending, hideo says you do still exist, meaning the girl he is with now only shows him glimpses of the past rarely as though sahana drifts in and out. if you have ever had a death in your life this is very similar as you will have moments with others than remind you deeply of the past with the deceased. it is deep and harder to decipher however not to the degree that it is incomprehensible. i loved this series and realizing she did die and he made it into college with support made it a very sad thing for me.

Well, I just finished reading the whole manga and I think its true Sahana died with him near the lake. Nevertheless I think he did have sex with her, but she was already dead, so it doesn’t count for the Roman Club.
Also I believe that the hypothesis of Sahana’s little sister is true, she is the woman next to Hideo.

I really liked the manga, I didn’t see the movies, but when they make a movie based on books the directors have their own view so I tends to change what the autor wants to say with the manga.

    February 27, 2011 at 11:35 pm

I just finished reading the whole manga and yeah I too think that Sahana died. In a way you ca tell when he started explaining the thing about the sea flowers and that the flower(foam) whatever was made of the carcasses plankton’s ,it kinda gives you a feeling of you know sadness and death or so,idk how to describe it. I think she died after asking him to get in with her in the sleeping bag because after that it skips to him on top of her and her seemingly being lifeless

What bothers me a bit is that if he really did commit necrophilia or just jerked off on top of her. in one of the pages you can see him on top of her and one of her hand was was like thrown upwards and on the next page were he climaxes she’s still in the same pose ,but this time you see her other hand which is the opposite (just thrown downwards) she looks more of a corpse to me rather than you know just being too tired after having sex.

afterward you see him being a doctor and that one of the OB was talking too him so seeing that i suppose he got support from the OB after graduating a virgin which gives me reason to believe that he jerked off on top of her, then again maybe he did do her and none of the OB saw it and he still got the support from OB,
or maybe he got to become a doctor on his own which is unlikely because of the incident where he got got in the hospital naked.i mean you know a stunt like that could seriously stain your record for life unless you know people

So yeah i hate open endings .So many questions left unfulfilled

i agree the ending was way to open and left way to many questions.

but i can’t help but wonder, in the scene where he escapes the hospital with kurumi and you see the her doctor standing with the other guy who are apparently roman club O.B.s would they really just let her die like that, or was her “condition” something they were doing to her to help him become a better person, such as drawing blood from her and giving her blood thinners to make her have the bloody noses, which if thats the case it could easily be kurumi he’s with at the end just healthier since he only said he’d be a doctor to take care of her, so if she died wouldn’t he rather be as far away from hospitals as possible to avoid the bad memories.

maybe i’m just trying to be optimistic, but kurumi’s death just seems like such a bad ending to such a good series

After reading all the comments of others, i have come to think that she did die but it was after last part where it says lets have sex when i wake up. Also it did look like Hideo was crying bit or something like that in the few pages before it. Also the wife could be the sister of Sahana. But we could all be wrong, i guess the author did this on purpose to make us all think for our selves, which is quite frustrating when you dont want the manga to end just like that

    • G3N3
      March 15, 2011 at 8:36 am

Also there is sort of another clue that gives me a feeling that Sahana didnt die, when she said that the other were getting married in the last few pages. That might indicate its Sahana but it could be just that Hideo introduced them to the person that looks like Sahana, the current wife.

She does die. There is foreshadowing throughout the whole story. Re-read it and you’ll see all those little details. I think it was a good story and I am satisfied with it. The last scene is pretty obvious that the woman there is not karumi. She her conversation about the other members of the roman club insinuate that she doesn’t have knowledge about why they are the way they are. If she was alive the last line “She does exist” doesn’t make any sense. It seems that the way Aiba is talking to his partner reminds him of Karumi and he feels that a part of her does exist. Well anyways thats my two cents.

A great manga! Just read it online and would like to share some of my interpretations (hopefully the translations are accurate…)

    1) The wife or gf at the end is not Kurumi’s “Sister”. The wife has a mole on the left side of her face while the “sister” don’t. The “sister” was entering a children home when she was introduced. This wld suggest that Kurumi did not lied to Aiba parents about her being an orphan (in an earlier chapter) and that the “sister” was someone she grew up wif in the children home.

    2) Aiba did have sex have kurumi. After she died. This can be seen from the movement actions from the position they’re in and the small rocking of her lifeless hand.

Why its reasonable they did: She told Aiba she would have sex with him when she wakes up. This wld suggest that she is finally agreeable to sex with him. I also believe that Aiba would not want to lose his virginity to ANYONE ESLE. Even though at that time she must be extremely skinny, unattractive, even dead-ish. Well, he love her.

Sex with Kurumi would also meant him nt getting the sponsorship from the OB. However, that no longer matters as Aiba is forever changed because of Kurumi and can become a doctor through his own hardwork.

    3) Although Aiba has a wife or gf,that is after many years, so one cannot say he wasn’t sad, perhaps just that he moved on. However, when the wife made the comments on two ppl finding the same thing wonderful, seems to me he remembered his golden shower with kurumi, (the part where the classmates questioned him and kurumi said Aiba must be really romantic to like golden showers) and thus he replied thanks to his wife. It seems although he moved on, kurumi still lives in some part of him.

Just my 2 cents worth. Thanks yall~

I understand your argument, and I know that everyone is going to try to disprove me from my opinion (Pablo) but here is why I think she is alive. One thing that has really bugged me over and over is when Aiba has his conversation with the doctor that used to take care of Kurumi. He’s speaking to him about getting tired out and then Aiba explains to him that whenever he does “this it tightens up right here”. Now I know this might be a farcry, but is it plausible that he had a transplant surgery to save her from whatever illness she had? I know that the mole is a big sticking point too, but it could be makeup. Thats also a stretch, but possible since she is going to take a shower, which could mean she hadn’t washed away the makeup from the day. I still think that the “Golden Shower” was Aido’s and Kurumi’s thing and that he wouldnt think about doing it with anyone else. He even said he wants her “pee to be only for him”, which kind leads to an exclusivity in the action if I might suggest. Not to mention, and I know we are getting really technical now, could you imagine what the authorities might do to him if he came back with her and she died? We are talking about kidnapping and suspected murder here. If he came back with her dead then Im pretty sure he would have gone to jail, or at least been expelled from his school outright and never gotten to college. If she was alive she would have been able to testify to keep Aido from going to jail/juvie/whatever. So in summation I believe Kurumi is alive, and that they live happily ever after. Now we can all sleep at night and not want to kill ourselves over this epic series.

She died in the boat and he had sex with her corpse. This is emphasized, not just by her hand being completely motionless the whole time he’s doing her, but also by the fact that after he finishes, it goes back and explains what she whispered to him, “When I wake up, let’s have sex.” She was not awake during sex. Her eyes were closed, she doesn’t move or change her position. Nothing. Also, when it finally explains that “wave flowers” are dead plankton rising up from the sea, it clearly shows her body outlined by them, symbolizing her death. She told him at the start she would never have sex with him, but she never said he couldn’t have sex with her, and that’s only possible if she’s dead, because then she’s definitely not having sex, being a corpse and all. So yeah, in a story filled to the brim with weird fetishes, it shouldn’t be surprising that Hideo ends up committing necrophilia.

That woman at the end IS NOT Sahana. Hideo used to get hard no matter what she did, and there’s no way something like being tired would stop him from sleeping with her. Ever. She missed the golden shower reference, which is critical, and she didn’t have the AIR that Sahana had. I mean, Sahana knew what Hideo wanted as he thought of it. She could read him like a book. This woman was just a way for him to move on. She probably made him happy, and he probably loved her, but she wasn’t Sahana. She never would be, but I guess he’d already made his peace with that.

It was a pretty confusing ending, but the little things piled up and it made sense in a way. Forget the fact that I read like the last 8 chapters something like a year after I’d read the first part, so it was confusing as FUCK for me to put together. Possibly the saddest ending to any manga I’ve read. It was an intensely emotional ride. The sex stuff was less erotic, to me, and more there to show exactly how deep Hideo’s affection for Sahana went. After I realized that Sahana was dead when he was having sex with her… man, that part of the story was just so cold and sad. If something like that had happened to me, I couldn’t have had sex with a corpse, but I definitely would’ve had an easy time killing myself right there to join her. That’s the direction I thought the story was gonna go in, but I’m glad it didn’t.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that’s how it all went down. If it’s too sad to take, then just chew on this, Einstein theorized that there are an infinite number of alternate dimensions where the world differs from the one we are in, some in massive ways, so much so that you wouldn’t even recognize the planet, and others in ways so small, you would never know the difference. So, this means that somewhere, in an alternate reality, the mangaka couldn’t go through with killing Sahana off, and she stills lives on with Hideo. Maybe her illness was cured, maybe she was never sick, maybe she just got better through a miracle, but whatever the cause, she’s still alive. To the rest of you, this was a prime example of catharsis and it was a beautiful ending, minus the necrophilia.

      Sundome CH 76

Kurumi had HIV. Probably, she had no parents and grew up with her siblings in a foster home/ orphanage. Anyhow, she was probably sexually abused at her original home or sometime in her childhood. She is very comfortable with sex and sexy things and comforts Slutty-tits after she blows her BF. Most teens are not this comfortable with sexual things. Look at Hideo, he is not comfortable with it. So, she has experience. She tells the narrator, Hideo, that they will never have sex. The fact that her last days were spent in isolation and her relatively slow decline in health (lowering weight) probably suggests that she had HIV. The disease is a slow progression where the virus slowly eats up your immune system (attacks CD4+ T-cells/you need T and B cells to illicit a strong immune response) and you die as a person which is chronically sick and can’t fight infections and is constantly coughing and that’s what she looked like. It is strongly suggested to say the least (primarily pill based antiviral drug coctails and later when her immune system fails they supply her with intravenous more effective toxic drugs as well as IV packs to simply supply nutrients to her blood). On the beach, she knows her time is up, BUT she knows that a SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE like HIV would infect Hideo. He’s horny and suggests that he could just jerk himself off but a bubble is bleeped out. It probably has her saying ‘rub against me like we are having sex.’ Both her hands are up, his hands are down but he just rubbing against her like they have before and he cums outside. Do you think he knows the pull-out method? Her time is up. If they had sex it wouldn’t be all over her afterwards. Before she falls asleep she tells him ‘let’s have sex when I wake up.’ But she doesn’t her hand never closes on his. SO LOVEY AND SAD. BEST sick-love manga

The girl at the end is just a new girl. He can’t get it up/cums too early with her whatever. That would not be a problem with THE KURUMI. She has a mole on the left side of her chin and has never done a golden shower. It is not kurumi nor the person which you see at the daycare that smells her. It may just be a somebody.

Probably, she got sick at the daycare, and had to leave to the city to get treatment at the hospital when her symptoms started showing up. That’s why she transfers in and lives alone.

If she had hiv she never would have left him give oral sex on her as he ” in jested” her fluids a fewtimes and she also gave him oral, and pissed into his mouth , those have very low transmit ion rates but not 0. and the BIGGEST one is she let him lick her blood off of her while it was fresh which would be an insane risk for somone Hiv positive. It was obvious she loved him and would not endanger him with her blood

just finished the whole manga in one 8 hour read n and weep fest. I laughed, I cried and am still trying to get over it the next day. I never expected for a fetish manga to go so far as necrophilia, but it makes the end all that more sad and beautiful. Funny how these managa-ka’s can put a near acceptable spin on anything even something as horrid as have secks with a corpse

Пиздецки плохо. Just end reading. It is very very mess manga. And the necro too disgusting. Maybe because of this he can’t have sex with wife? Who, i think, is not Sahana. She’s acting to different for Sahana. Just some girl he meet’s after. But can he meet another woman after this? You’re first love dying… Not even first love, something a way too bigger. Way to bigger to stay normal. I’ve messed just reading fiction like this. If some of that come true, just shot me away. I better believe he not have sex with her. Even if he have sex after she died, it still gonna be a lot of sign. Some physical SCI-tv sign. And i don’t think stuff in morgue close eye’s on this. And man who fucked corpse, ain’t gonna be doctor. He’ll go in jail, where mates push him through wall. So end is pretty fucked, yes it feel sad and beautiful, but i prefer some shinny pinky “iloveyougrowoldtogether” ending instead. Or just end’s with nice picture their sit in club room, talking about something. The Picture that fan’s gonna print on t-shirts.

NHK have better end for me. Not such negative impact. Still Great Manga. Character you ain’t gonna forget, and that corrupt love they have… Think author make mistake by ending like this. Yeah, the girl at the end was not Kurumi Sahana… She was objective of the golden shower idea which was a staple in the foreplay that Aiba and Sahana had. 😦 Sadly, this mangaka wanted the obscurity in the ending in order to invoke the bittersweet remorse that Sahana still influences Aiba even after death. At his near inability to complete in sex. It also is a testament to the relations that people have with each other. That, even as time goes, we fight against the current of life and struggle to grasp beauty before our end. It was symbolic, tragic, and made me cry… Look back on the final chapter from what I just said.

I never will believe necrophilia was ever a part of this story. How could you think it possible? It never once crossed my mind.
I believe she died of AIDS and that was why she swore she would never have sex with him.

From looking at the panels closely, I’m of the opinion that 2 possible things occurred: 1. Kurumi dies WHILE they have sex or 2. she was giving him an hand job, but since she was super weak he had to provide the motion. I’m of the opinion that it was #2 as in some of the frames his pelvis was just too damn high. I came to this conclusion from the fact that the fingers of her hand changed positions during the act. I think the panel showing her with white hair and no shadow is the panel that indicates that she died(alive – black hair, dead – white hair).

Further proving she is dead is Aiba’s comment to the doctor that if he stand up straight it feels like his chin is being pulled back. This is actually a hint to another folk legend that a loved one’s ghost would ride on your shoulder’s(there’s even a Thai horror movie with this as a theme). It could also possibly be why he was too tired to keep going in the sack with his new honey. And speaking of new honey, I doubt she was Kurumi’s sister as her sister didn’t have a mole.

Though I didn’t like the ending much I think Aiba is doing what Kurumi would want him to do. Since the whole plot pretty much was about her training him to be a man, hell an good man so that he could live his life for the two of them after she dies.

Most teens are not this comfortable. On the beach, she knows her time is up. At the end, she jerks him off and dies. Both her hands are up, his hands are down but he just rubbing against her like they have before and he cums outside. Before she falls asleep she tells him ‘let’s have sex when I wake up.’ But she doesn’t her hand never closes on his. SO LOVEY AND SAD.

The girl at the end is just a new girl. He can’t get it up/cums too early with her whatever. She has a mole on the left side of her chin and has never done a golden shower–not kurumi nor her sister? which you see at the daycare that smells her. It may just be somebody. Probably, she got sick at the daycare, and had to leave to the city to get treatment at the hospital when her symptoms started showing up. That’s why she transfers in and lives alone.

stupid scumm bags, only thing i didn’t quite understand what she was dying from, if she has problem with blood coagulation that is understandable why she does not allow to have sex with her, she simply would have died from blood leak, to thous dooshes who believe in necrophilia ending i will simply said go and F_CK hell of your self, i would prefer to believe that they have their last jerk off :]

I’m guess based on symptoms, life span, and Kurumi not particularly seeming concerned with infecting others, that it’s something like deteriorating bone marrow. Nose bleeds, gradual loss of weight and muscle mass, fatigue, loss of appetite, sudden, severe pain all over, eventually leading to death. As Dr. House says,”the symptoms fit.”

      • Junbei
        August 31, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Thanks for that, I was wondering what it was the whole time. I googled deterioriating bone marrow and I have a hunch she suffered from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia which is the most common cancer in children.

        Weakness or feeling tired (check)
        Easy bruising or bleeding
Bleeding under the skin / Coughing up blood (check)
        Shortness of breath (check)
Weight loss or loss of appetite (check)
Pain in the bones or stomach (check?)
Pain or a feeling of fullness below the ribs (check?)
Painless lumps in the neck, underarm, stomach, or groin

ALL rapidly progresses which may have lead to her degradation. It appears most often in children younger than age 10. ALL can get worse quickly, so doctors usually begin treatment right away. Maybe Kurumi didn’t catch it quick enough when she was younger leading to a terminal state. Thus, accepted her fate and avoided chemotherapy.

This is my quick assumption based off of daitengu’s analysis.

Well after reading all the comments and also after reading this whole thing (the manga) in little under 8hrs and crying my eyes out, I think I have figure it out. Thanks to you fine folks of course.

    1. The first subject I like to touch on is the whole “necrophilia” thing. There is a part of me that thinks he did it, but thanks to Mr/Ms. Daitengu I am leaning towards no. Because as Daitengu explains, I think he was just providing the motion for a “hand job”. as you never see her left hand until the act (whether it be sex or the tug job) is done. The writer is always showing you the right hand, the one thats NOT being used. and it seems to go more limp as the act progress. That and I thought back, and I don’t feel that Aiba would have sex with her, because he always professes through out the story that he would not have sex with her because of her not wanting him to, and he hates breaking promises to her. That and he came on her stomach, dont get me wrong I under stand the concept of “pulling out” but in this case if he knew he was doing a corpse, I mean, not to be disgusting but there would be no reason to. It makes more sense for him to be getting a hand job right over her pelvis area. And then when he does finish the deed thats when she passes, but there is still the possibility that he did do a dead body im just saying to me it makes more sense that he didn’t.. But her death is another thing I’ll touch on.

    2. She does die, no doubt about it. If you go and read Daitengu’s comment, he/she provides info on it, and her death is for shadowed through the whole thing. Examples: a. She takes the gold fish out of the bowl that represents her, and “Kills” it, most likely. b. There are a few scenes when Aiba is blacking out, or falling asleep, and she makes little comments like “I wont be with you forever” or something along those lines, im not quoting it directly. But if you read the manga you know what im talking about. And of course I think the most obvious evidence is when Aibia is narrating and he says “that was the first and last summer I was with her” and I think there was another one similar to that line.

    3. Continuing from Kurmui’s death, the woman at the end is just some woman that Aiba is now with. I mean I dont know how much school in japan it takes to become a doctor of medicine but assuming it takes as long as it does in the U.S. I want to say she died like there Jr year of highschool , after he spent only one summer with her, and I want to say at the start of the stroy he says that he is 15. So one more year of highschool after her death, and about 6 to 8 years in college he should be in his late to early thirties by now. So of course he would be able to coupe with her death. He is able to find a new woman who he can care for, and he is able to fulfill what he told her (Kurmui) he wanted to become. The ending line of “yous still exist” is just him saying that he sees qaulity’s of Kurmui in his new girl. That and she still exists within him, her memory.

    anything I didnt touch on?

Man, it’s been three days since I finished the last volume, and I’m still running things over in my mind, trying to answer the same questions that others here have posed… Haven’t been this affected by something I’ve read for a long, long time. And it’s an ero-manga! WTF!! I’m getting old, or weird, or both…

So, in a vain attempt to exorcise my Sundome demons, here’re my thoughts on the questions that people have asked:

Firstly, the things I’m pretty certain of:
Sahana is dead at the end ;_; Aiba’s wife is too different in both appearance and behavior to be her. Oh, I wish she was Sahana, but she’s not :-(((
“You still exist” – as BigMan pointed out in the comments to “Sundome, the Greatest Manga… Part 3”, this is a direct reference to what the O.B. says in Chapter 73: “Your existence… is also her existence”. To me it’s much more than just the usual “I remember you, so you still exist”: Sahana wanted Aiba to have a life with some purpose, some direction, to live life for both of them and not to waste it in apathy. Clearly by the end she’s succeeded…

And now the not-so-clear: who’s saying what at on the beach, when exactly does Sahana die, do they have sex or not?
Maybe I’m overthinking things, but a lot of the dialogue is almost interchangeable between Sahana and Aida. I imagine the most usual reading is:
    Aida: “Why… Was it me?”
Sahana: “You… were the same as me”

But I reckon it could equally well be:
Sahana (looking up at Aida): “Why… Was it me?”
Aida: “You… were the same as me”
Ahhh… overthinking maybe, as I said. But I like the possible symmetry there.

So, onto the most important questions:
No, I don’t think they have sex. For me, at least, it wouldn’t fit with the tone of the story. More importantly, my feeling is that it’s Aida that says “When I wake up, let’s have sex”. Being able to say this to Sahana marks the completion of his transformation into someone with confidence, who can state his desires. I have to say I do like the idea that it’s Aida that says “Huh” after he says “I could jerk off…” and that’s it’s Sahana whispering “When I wake up, let’s have sex” to him, but the frame doesn’t look right to me – she’s looks more like she’s just turned to him, not that she’s whispering in his ear (and I have a feeling the author would have put a “…” bubble near her if she were speaking but the reader “can’t hear”). So – my impression is that she’s drifting in and out of consciousness (probably having doped herself up on morphine to deal with the pain), and honestly didn’t quite hear what Aiba said.

So when does Sahana actually die? I have one element of wishful thinking here, which I hope is what the author intended, and that’s that she actually lives long enough to see the wave flowers. Because if that’s the case, and given that they don’t appear until Aida’s climaxed, then she’s at least alive until that point. So what I like to think (because it helps me sleep a bit better) is that the dialogue about the wave flowers happens after he’s come, and they’re just lying in the sleeping bag watching them, and then he ends by saying “When I wake up, let’s have sex”. I KNOW she looks awfully like she’s dead in that frame, but it’s very similar to her expression earlier when Aida says “Are you tired?”. So again, wishful thinking, but I like to think she’s just asleep or unconscious at that point and that she slips away sometime after that…
    (Bwahh – I swore I wouldn’t blub when I wrote this, but it’s proving awfully difficult now… Think about ex-prez and his anal fixation, that’ll do it…. or Kyouko’s melons O_o )

It might make you feel better, or not, but there’s some footage here of actual wave flowers in Japan:

So, that’s my 2c…Definitely one of the most bittersweet things I’ve ever read. And somehow also one of the most erotic. Makes most porn look like so much jiggling cuts of meat in a badly animated butcher’s shop window.

Is that OK, Kurumi-chan? Did I get it right? I love you and all, but it’d be nice if you’d get off my shoulders and let me think about something else now…

Reckon I need to go and watch the last three episodes of Madoka Magica to cheer myself up now O_o; Homuhomu.

I love all of these comments. I too, a full grown male in my 20’s teared up and felt completely moved by this manga, which I finished today. The funny thing is my female friend recommended this series to me and a part of me regrets finishing it.

I think most of us wanted to see a miracle throughout all the forsaken foreshadowing. We wanted Kurumi to survive even if it meant she would be stuck in a wheelchair or the hospital for the rest of her life. As long as she was alive, that’s all that matters. We didn’t want this beautiful, deep, amazing character to just simply fade away. That’s what pissed me off after flipping through the final agonizing pages.

Okada could have done a better job on the ending. I’m not saying he should have changed Kurumi’s fate, but he could have left all that bullshit after her death OUT. I mean honestly, what a shitty way to end a beautiful story. You fast-forward to the future with some broad we don’t give a shit about. How about showing him visiting a grave? Maybe him hanging out at the rock where they first did “it”. Or better yet, let us keep wondering if she really is alive by having a woman there but remain faceless as if there was a possibility it could be Kurumi. I definitely feel Okada pushed it too far with showing us a new chick right after our favorite girl just dies!

What makes me regret finishing this amazing series is the crazy rollercoaster it took me. I wanted more and more ecchi adventures between the two. I never wanted it to end. A part of me wanted to see Sundome stay true to the beginning roots of pure lewd excitement and pretend the ending never happened. The other part of me will always treasure this hidden tragic gem. I was wishing there would be sequels and (future) future OAVs we could all celebrate. At last, the ending was such an emotional bomb, I can’t figure out where I am at the moment.

Thank you Okada. Thank you Kurumi. Long live seinan manga.

I agree with Junbei and Daitengu, her disease was most likely ALL or AML. That would also be why she was in an isolation room at the end, due to immune deficiency brought on by her advancing leukemia.

A few comments. The train passes by a “Children’s Home”, which I am assuming is the orphanage where Kurumi was brought up; by the two ladies’ comments, it probably means they were expecting her death soon, and thought they felt her presence (“Is Kurumi-chan here?” “She is… maybe”).

And, it looks like he pulled out and came on her stomach. Hence, “stopping before the end”. And, when she said “When I wake up, let’s have sex”… I don’t think she ever woke up.

When Kurumi and Aiba where at the summer festival, She was holding the two fish she caught and said that “it’s you and me” in chapter 58. She also named it “Her Majesty” and “Spooked Hideo-kun.” I believe that the fish “Her Majesty” foreshadowed the death of Kurumi. Also, Kurumi had massive nosebleeds which makes me believe that she had some illness. When Aiba, Kyouko, and Katsu were freeing Kurumi from the hospital, Kyouko said crying, “I’m glad that I knew her” knowing that she would never see her again. Also at the end, when he was having sex with the unknown woman, she asked him if he wants to try a different sex play and Aiba said “Golden Shower” But then she said “that’s pervy” like she had never given someone a golden shower. And the part “You still exist” believes me that he still has feelings for her

The thing is that the writers wanted an ending that left a lot to the imagination. What they wanted was for the reader to decide the best ending for them selves. For instance if the reader wanted a happy ending then all the reader had to do was say hay look at that new mole Sahana is sporting although I do wonder about that reaction to his golden shower comment. How ever if the reader wanted a sad romantic ending than all they had to do was say awww poor dead Sahana, I wonder why Aiba is with some other women when he never cared about women before her.

Either way I find the entire ending to be a total cop out. They should have just stuck to their guns and killed off Sahana properly not vaguely. After all every character that dies in their anime or manga deserves a proper death not a half assed one. I don’t know if someone else has already written something similar to this though because I did not bother to read most of the responses, so sorry if someone already said something similar.

      February 22, 2012 at 5:19 am

There were visual metaphors for her death and a cultural reference to her death. Everyone knows she died that night on the beach, only real debate is when specifically.

The ending is obviously several years later as he’s working at a hospital, and not in High school. Pretty obvious his current girl isn’t Sahana, only looks ‘kinda’ similar. The ending is suppose to show that Aiba is trying his best to live for the two of them(himself and Sahana).

she did die right there on the beach :,( you can tell the future woman isent her because shes grossed out about the golden shower. Plus she doesent understand the roman club. That’s my thoughts. I read the series and I’m really enjoying re-reading it again now I think Kurumi dies too,but the reason Hideo gets a way with not getting into deep trouble over her death is the two OB doctors see the Roman club in action probably their finest hour so they sort out the paperwork and signed out Kurumi to Hideo’s care and as a terminal patient Kurumi will have final word on the choice to die hospital or not. I think its a real credit to the writing of this manga that we all care so much about Kurumi and what happens to her, she is after all a fictional character and yet shes very real

Will be buying all 8 volumes having finished reading it digitally. Really is a masterpiece.

    About the very final column in the ending;
I thought this was his wife/girlfriend reconsidering Golden Shower as opposed to Hideo talking to “spirit” Sahana.

Other than that, I’m not too bothered as to what her disease was, or why she kept it a secret. But the secretive nature she kept until the end to protect Hideo from the truth was as harmful as much as it was a benefit to their relationship. I really do wish the mangaka wrapped their final moments up better. Really, there’s having an open ending them just making it overly vague.

they went to the beach. Hideo jerked off above her and came on her. he layed down next to her, and she said “when I wake up, lets have sex.” Hideo fell asleep. Sahana died while sleeping or never fell asleep at all. It doesn’t really matter who the woman is at the end, except that it’s not Sahana.
all of this was very obvious to me, I don’t think there should be any debate about the ending at all.

Actually, I think the ending was perfect.

What Sahana gave Aiba was not just love, but the ability to be a stronger and better person. It was sad that she died, but ultimately her greatest gift to Aiba was the ability to recover from her death. Moving on was probably what she wanted for him, even if she would never admit it.

Holy… It really tore me apart for 2 days. Comedy, you think, then you stop being happy “before the very last moment”. I was puzzled over all this, the ending gave me a headache, but I knew she died. Every volume hinted, it will not end well for our beloved, twisted couple. Now it’s been cleared thanks to the comments above. I suffer from depression, so endings like that hit me harder than anyone I know, but thanks to it I truly can feel empathy more than them. So was with Clannad after story, I relived the saddest moment for days.
Good story, one of the most heartbreaking mangas I read to date. And the funny thing is, it was heartbreaking even though it wasn’t your regular manga with normal people who you can associate with.

I think that it is established that they did not have sex. Sahana was tired, so Aiba jerks off and comes on her stomach. This is shown. Her last words are that they will have sex when she wakes up. And she doesn’t. This is a callback to her promise to never have sex with him, in their first conversation.

I think that she made this promise because she was an assassin. Kyouko confesses to being an assassin, and says that the deal is that the Roman OB’s will pay for her university study. Sahana also had a deal with the OB’s. Take down Aiba in exchange for personal treatment from the doctor. This is why the doctor doesn’t flinch or react when Aiba reveals intimate details of their sex life.

Sahana immediately declares to Aiba that she will never have sex with him, because that will jeopardise his future. All the cold manipulation at first, then the power games and withholding physical contact later on were about her ensuring that Aiba will get his scholarship. She desperately wanted to sleep with him, but never did.

This was truly the Roman Clubs finest hour. The OB’s at the hospital failed in their mission, but let a dying girl experience true love with one of their members. Later, Aiba is of course a junior resident at the same hospital, showing that he was rewarded for graduating a virgin.

thanks flabslapper for this article….going through page ..the comments ….helped me recover from the emotional trauma i went through because of this Stupendous piece of art…..being here was sort of a Group therapy

agree with others that Sahana did die….the cause, most probably being leukemia……but what disturbs me is when exactly?

“Wave flowers….are when plankton gets stirred up in the sea …by chasing waves and strong wind…doesnt it make you sad? …. ITS MORE BEAUTIFUL …THAN IF THEY JUST SANK INTO THE SEA ” the last part here (in caps) …does it hint that he was sort of having sex with a Sahana who was already dead????

and wats the deal with numbering of chapter from 11 to 15…..am i missing some chapters in between or is it the way they are numbered?

Just finish reading! I definitely agree she died. I don’t believe he had sex with her corpse. As others already said she was giving him a hand job. Explaining why you only see one hand. I don’t think she had Aids. If she did I don’t think she would have agreed to have sex with him in the morning ( unless she knew she was going to die before they woke up). It was a good series but the ending was a let down. Glad I came to this forum and read so many different points of view.

I also seriously doubt she had HIV/AIDS. They exchanged so much bodily fluid and did so many risky behaviors that honestly what’s the point in drawing the line at vaginal intercourse? If she had HIV, then she would have gone apeshit and told him to keep away when her nose was bleeding.

I just read this manga and my thoughts were she died after telling him they’d have sex after she wakes up, him knowing she died used her body more so in a necrophilia type of thing which I guess doesn’t count as sex and simply dated and/or had relations with women who resembled her then from then.

Great manga, great ending. Thanks everybody for the comments – they were helpful to figure out some doubtful moments. But one thing is still incomprehensible: why did she say that thing with “no sex”? Is it really connected to “assassin”? “OB”? I think when you are dying from cancer all these Roman club customs appear to be suprisingly silly.

What if Kurumi is actually an assassin who works for the OB’s? Maybe The doctor thought that he could use Kurumi’s last few years to teach one of the current members of the Roman club a valuable life lesson, hence his quote on chapter 59 “Your existence is also her existence”. And because Kurumi is naturally nice, she was determined to make her target to pass the Alumni’s challenge, hence her quote “I will never have sex with you”. And because Kurumi knew she would spend the rest of her life seducing Aiba, out of the heat of the moment, she slipped by saying she wanted him to take her to see the Wave Flowers again from her hometown. I thought that maybe that was her hometown because there was a bunch of people who knew her. This request made Aiba try harder on his part time job later on. And judging from the place the people that knew her lived, I’m guessing she was an orphan and that’s how she was spotted by the doctor. She was sick and the doctor treated her in exchange for being an assassin. Then she falls in love with Aiba and everything just turns into an amazing erotic, dramatic, tragic love story.
It’s all fun and games until someone falls in love 😀
This is easily one of my favorite Mangas of all time XD it’s got an amazing moving plot which is very entertaining and could make manly men cry 🙂 no joke.. Thinking about the ending literally kept me awake for another 3-4 hours XD It’s not easily recommendable because of all the sexual stuff going on but if you can get over the fear of being judged then you must share it to the world. Good read 🙂

I have a pet theory that I’ve never seen mentioned anywhere: Kurumi is in fact an assassin. It’s too much of a coincidence for me that her personal physician is the O.B., and then she just happens to go check out the Roman Club after school. It’s also another reason on top of her condition why she might want to avoid telling Aiba anything at all about the old man. I think that when they were first alone in the club room (the “nail” incident) and Aiba told her his erection got bigger because of her smile, that she fell hard for him. She wanted to be together with him, but did not want to jeopardize his future support from the O.B., so she told him, “I’ll never have sex with you…” Not because sex is incompatible with her medical or psychological condition, but because she could not bring herself to carry out the assassination against such a nice doggie / boy.

Try re-reading the manga as an actual horror story: remember the purpose of the Roman Club? To find ghosts and aliens? What if the girl is the real deal? Than the ending changes completely, it’s about a boy who is being haunted by a dead spirit. Even the pages of them having kinky encounters become filled with a wierd, unsettling dread. Just who is this mysterious orphan anyways–she is dark and mysterious, just like the dead plankton that make up the wave flowers.

I seriously don’t know how to feel about this. When I first read the ending I was all ‘ hey, Sahana-Kun has long hair, that’s nice. But then she says some strange stuff and at the point of understanding that it’s not her, I got angry and confused. I seriously don’t know if I should be crying or not ’cause I was so ready and building myself up to see the scene with her dying….and then that. The only other anime/manga that has done that to me is Chrono Crusade, but even then I got some answers. I guess it was best left to the imagination.

    Hey guys,

How I always saw the ending was that Sahana died, and he moved on. He loved her dearly but did not let that consume his future. After (what I imagine happened) he passed his depression of losing her, and accepted her death, he continued to strive to complete his dream of becoming a doctor. While reaching his position, somewhere in his life he found his new wife. He loved Sahana, but she’s dead now, and he still sees her a little in his new wife.
He grew to love his new wife and is now continuing a healthy life, without any repressed emotions and thoughts. A clean slate. (well, more or less)
In that sense I thought the story had a satisfying ending. I cried, but its the best that could have come out of the situation without divine intervention, so I reconciled myself with that…

I actually foreshadowed around chapter 26 and noticed the tragedy tag. It was either death by illness or she was getting sexual abuse by some older fella. So i skipped to the ending, and seriously this is why i avoid tragedy tag. It is so heart-wrenching. And no i skipped everything in between cause i need some piece of mind

Really great manga. I was honestly close to crying, me, a 30+ grown up man. I would never have imagined that an erotic manga would hit me so hard emotionnally. I’ve spent hours after that with a deep sense of gloom and loss, and the confusion due to this half-assed open ending didn’t help. So thanks for your theories here, it all makes better sense to me now I guess. But it’s still sad.

Thanks for all those comments / opinions. The manga is getting a german translation now (3 books released so far), but I couldn’t help to spoil the other books beforehand in english and the ending left me wondering too. ^^
I think the manga is a real masterpiece – and so is the ending – once you understand all the little details in it. And in that regard, this Bloog was a great help.

And well, I just love stories that have endings or events you can’t forget easily and have a certain complexity (with discussion-quality) to it. (Like “Clannad” or the korean movie “A tale of two sisters”.) And this one was misterious, fun, intelligent, erotic and a real tear-jerker. ^^
    Love it!

dude I figured it all out the ending scene on beach is connected with the name of the manga ‘sundome’ stopping before the moment and remember at start the she wouldn’t let him come and that’s what happened in the last scene on beach she died before he could come and it explains the roman club rule also that how he didn’t had proper sex and got the scholarship by alumni and become a docter.and that women at last wasn’t kurumi coz of mole and her ignorance with ufo for kyouko as real kurumi knew about how kyuko was fond of ufo as his bf was in ufo.
and main character said about their last summer together and all those lines are the main evidence tht she is dead.sad but truth

I love the discussion here and I wanna express my thoughts of this manga. I love this manga but the ending was too vague. It should have been straight to the point. With all the questions regarding If she is dead or not is pointless because it’s clear cut that Sahana died. Like others have said there are hints throughout the manga such as the lone fish, last summer quote, sahana herself saying things don’t last forever, etc. On the other hand their last scene together can be up in the air. For me they didn’t have sex because she said they would never have sex with him and in her dying moment I think he would respect Her wishes. Moreover I think she died the moment the planktons washed onto the shore because it meant death according to aiba. Therefore she jacked him off in her final moments and died. What I’m up in the air with was why she didn’t want to have sex with him. It could either be not wanting him to be attached to her which I think is the real reason and two so he can get into a good college by staying a virgin. Anyways I loved the manga despite the ending so I hope others share my point of view as well.

I just wanted to disappear after reading this manga. Its been years and still I’m in trauma. I cant stop thinking about it all day and I’m still reading the same manga over and over again hoping the ending will change. I lost my life after reading this one. I really wanted to meet the author of manga and ask him to change the sad ending to a happy one. I will blackmail him and going to rape his children if he will not comply with my demands. Haha just kidding but GOD. Its been years now and I’m still in pain for what happen in this manga.

I just finished and I would like to say the endings in the order I would like best

Best ending and most unlikely: Sahana is still alive and is the girl he is shown with at the ending.
2nd Best ending and likely: Aiba has real sex with Sahana before she died.
3rd best ending and most likely: Aiba was jerked off by Sahana before she died.
Worst ending and likeliness is determined how twisted the author is: Aiba had sex with Sahana’s coupes.

The last ending would twist the whole manga into a downward spiral.

      Sahana’s corpse*

I like the theory that Sahana was actually an assassin but she wanted Aiba to stay a virgin so she refused sex. Also i dont think Sahana had HIV because Aiba would still have gotten it from the amount of body fluid they exchanged.

While there is some ambiguity it’s fairly obvious that she dies at the beach having sex, it is strongly hinted at with her limp hand at the end, also the doctors talking about the hospital director will get in trouble for not stopping them. The wife shown with aiba at the end dident know about the golden shower or a lot about the club . While I hated it this was the ending that was always going to happen, the only summer they would ever spend together was clearly said. I don’t think they showed the new wife at the end to be vague but to show he was able to move on and love again… Which id say is what the main female character would have wanted more than anything . I can’t believe how emotional this was

Yes she dies at the end. Yes he married someone else. The title is “sundome” which means “before the end”. So the scene where they have sex is a little confusing. Either they do and she dies before he comes or she dies before they actually have sex. That part is a little confusing the way they wrote it. But yes the ending is him becoming a doctor because he said he would become one for her and take care of her always. And you can tell his wife isn’t her because he asks her for a golden shower and she says “no that’s gross”. I realize she changes her mind at the end but it’s pretty difinitive.
